— Two treatments

What is the difference between CO₂ and IPL?

One removes tissue and one does not. CO₂ fractional resurfacing is ablative: it takes away microscopic columns of skin across the treated area and leaves the tissue in between intact, so the skin repairs itself from thousands of small sites at once. That repair is the treatment, and it is also the reason healing time has to go into the calendar before anything is scheduled.

IPL is not a laser. It is broadband light, filtered to a chosen range of wavelengths and delivered in pulses, and what absorbs it is pigment in the skin and the blood inside small vessels rather than the water in the tissue. Nothing is removed, which is why the appointment leaves little or no downtime, and why a series is the usual shape. The FDA's medical lasers page covers how these devices are regulated and what the categories mean, and the AAD keeps a plain-language list of the skin conditions lasers and light devices are used to treat.

Ablative · downtime

CO₂ Fractional Skin Resurfacing

Renew and resurface your skin with advanced CO₂ fractional laser treatment. Designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores, sun damage, and skin firmness by stimulating the skin's natural renewal and collagen response.

What to expect

CO₂ resurfacing involves downtime. Redness, swelling, sensitivity, peeling, or crusting may occur during healing. Results develop gradually over the following weeks and months as the skin heals and remodels.

The American Academy of Dermatology's page on laser treatment for scars sets out what fractional resurfacing is used for and what the weeks after it involve. Read it before the consultation and you arrive with better questions.

Consultation required. Individual results and downtime vary.

Light-based · little downtime

IPL Skin Rejuvenation

Brighten and refresh uneven-looking skin with IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). This light-based treatment targets certain sun spots, brown pigmentation, facial redness, visible small vessels, and uneven skin tone for a clearer, more even-looking complexion.

What to expect

Temporary redness or mild swelling may occur, and treated brown spots may initially darken before gradually fading or flaking. A series of treatments may be recommended for optimal improvement.

Facial redness is the concern people most often arrive with a name for already. The AAD's own rosacea treatment page names intense pulsed light among the approaches dermatologists use to reduce flushing and improve the skin's texture, which is the clearest published description of what this category of device is for.

Consultation required. IPL is not appropriate for every skin type or pigmentation concern. Individual results vary.

Each treatment also has its own page — CO₂ laser resurfacing in Coon Rapids and the IPL photofacial — and both end where this one does, at a consultation arranged on the phone.

— The map

Which one is usually discussed for what?

Eleven concerns, split across the two treatments. Texture, scarring and firmness sit on the CO₂ side; colour — brown pigment, redness, small vessels — sits on the IPL side. Where your concern falls is what decides which of the two the consultation is about.

A concern can appear on neither list, and when it does the answer is usually further down this page, on the bookable skin menu.

What you want to change The treatment it belongs to
Fine lines CO₂ fractional skin resurfacing
Acne scars CO₂ fractional skin resurfacing
Uneven texture CO₂ fractional skin resurfacing
Enlarged-looking pores CO₂ fractional skin resurfacing
Sun damage CO₂ fractional skin resurfacing
Skin firmness CO₂ fractional skin resurfacing
Certain sun spots IPL skin rejuvenation
Brown pigmentation IPL skin rejuvenation
Facial redness IPL skin rejuvenation
Visible small vessels IPL skin rejuvenation
Uneven skin tone IPL skin rejuvenation

Both lists are the treatments' own descriptions rather than a promise about your skin. Which of the two is right for a given concern, and whether either one is, is settled at the consultation.

— Before anything is booked

Why does this start with a consultation?

Because six things decide the plan and none of them can be read off a booking form: your skin type, what you are treating, what you are putting on your face now, how much sun you have had recently, pregnancy, and your medications. Neither treatment is appropriate for everyone, and the consultation is where that gets established in person, with your skin in front of the conversation.

It is also where the cost is settled. Neither treatment is priced in advance, because the number depends on the answers above, and quoting one would mean quoting it for somebody else's face. Call (763) 317-6018 and the consultation is arranged around the studio's hours — Mon, Wed–Sat 10 AM–6:30 PM · Sun 12–5 PM · Closed Tuesday.

The six things that get asked

Your skin type
How your skin has responded to sun, to heat and to previous treatment is the first thing established, because it is what decides whether either treatment belongs in the conversation at all.
What you are treating
Texture, a scar, a flat brown patch, redness across the cheeks and a raised mark are five different problems that read as one in a mirror. Naming yours precisely is what sorts CO₂ from IPL from a peel.
What you are using now
Prescription retinoids, acne medication, exfoliating acids and anything photosensitizing change what can safely be done and when it can be done.
Recent sun exposure
A recent tan, a burn, or a week on a boat changes the plan, and in this state that means the run from Memorial Day to the end of September more than any other stretch of the year.
Pregnancy or nursing
Say so at the consultation. It is a normal part of the conversation, and it is easier to build around when it is known early.
Medications and history
Cold sores, a keloid tendency, recent oral acne medication and autoimmune conditions all matter here, and so does anything you have had done elsewhere in the last year.

Bring the labels, not the brand names

A retinoid, a prescription acne medication and a glycolic serum all change what can be done and when it can be done. The brand on the front of the bottle rarely says which one you are holding; the ingredient list on the back always does. Photograph the backs of everything you use on your face and bring the photographs, and the part of the conversation where nobody is certain what is in the bottle never has to happen.

Recent sun changes the date

What your skin has been doing outdoors changes the plan for both treatments, which in Minnesota makes the calendar part of it. A weekend on the river above the Coon Rapids Dam, a week at a lake in July, a spring afternoon of yard work that got away from you — each of those is worth mentioning, and each of them can move a consultation's date from next week out to October. If you are carrying a fresh tan, say so when you call — it is the kind of detail that moves a date before it is set.

— Bookable today

What can you book while you decide?

Six treatments, $70+ to $260, every one of them on the online booking system tonight. Several of them work on the same concerns the table above lists, from a different direction — peels and microneedling on texture and scarring, nano infusion on pigment and fine lines, facials on everything underneath.

Treatment Duration Price
Chemical Peel 25 min $70+
Dermaplane 25 min $70
Nano Infusion $50 deposit at booking, applied to the total 25 min $130
Customized Facial $35 deposit at booking, applied to the total 60 min $135
Anti-Aging Facial $50 deposit at booking, applied to the total 60 min $150
Microneedling or Nano Needling $60 deposit at booking, applied to the total 60 min $260

The short appointments

Chemical Peel and Dermaplane are both 25 min and both start at $70. A peel exfoliates chemically and is used for texture, tone, acne scarring, hyperpigmentation and sun damage; dermaplaning takes off the surface layer and the fine vellus hair with a blade. Nano Infusion is the third 25 min option at $130, used for fine lines, pigmentation and scarring.

The full-hour ones

Customized Facial at $135 is built in the room from what your skin is doing that day. Anti-Aging Facial at $150 runs exfoliation, deep cleansing, facial lifting and targeted serums. Microneedling or Nano Needling is $260 with a $60 deposit and works on the skin's own collagen response — the AAD lists it among the treatments used to fade acne scars. All three are on the skin care page.

— Afterwards

How do you look after skin after light or laser?

Sunscreen every day, about an ounce of it, reapplied every two hours. The American Academy of Dermatology's guidance on how to apply sunscreen asks for broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, water resistant, put on dry skin about fifteen minutes before you go outside and reapplied after swimming or sweating as well; an ounce is roughly a shot glass, which is the figure the AAD uses for covering the body. Skin that has been resurfaced or treated with light is more sensitive to sun than usual while it settles, so this is the instruction that carries the result.

The rest of the aftercare is set at the consultation, because it follows the treatment you end up having. What the AAD publishes about treating wrinkles and sun-damaged skin is the best general reading on where these treatments sit among everything else dermatologists use.

The window Minnesota gives you

October to April is the easy half of the year for this, and it is easy for a dull reason: you are barely outdoors. The sun sits low, the daylight is short, and the exposure that has to be managed afterwards is a fraction of what the same instruction means in July. Two exceptions are worth planning around: fresh snow reflects a large share of the light straight back up at your face, and a low winter sun sits in the windshield for the whole westbound run along Highway 10.

Book the calendar backwards

A wedding in June, a reunion in August, a passport photograph in the spring — start from the date and count back. CO₂ results develop gradually over the following weeks and months, and an IPL series runs across several appointments, so the date on the invitation is what decides when the first consultation should happen. Starting that conversation in October or November leaves the most room in the calendar.

Asked & answered.

Anything not answered here is answered on the phone. Call (763) 317-6018 and ask — the consultation is the appointment where all of this gets decided.

Do you offer laser treatments? +

CO₂ fractional skin resurfacing and IPL skin rejuvenation are both available by consultation. Neither is bookable online and neither is priced on this site, because the plan depends on your skin type and what you are treating. Call to arrange the consultation.

What is the difference between CO₂ laser resurfacing and IPL? +

One removes tissue and one does not. CO₂ fractional resurfacing is ablative — it takes away microscopic columns of skin and leaves the tissue between them intact, which is why healing time is part of the plan. IPL is not a laser: it is filtered broadband light, absorbed by pigment and by the blood inside small vessels, and it leaves little or no downtime.

How much does CO₂ resurfacing or IPL cost at Fiona's Day Spa? +

Neither treatment is priced on this site, because the plan depends on your skin type, on what is being treated and on how many sessions it calls for. Call (763) 317-6018 and the consultation settles the plan and the cost together, before anything is scheduled.

How much downtime does CO₂ resurfacing involve? +

CO₂ resurfacing involves downtime. Redness, swelling, sensitivity, peeling or crusting may occur during healing, and results develop gradually over the following weeks and months as the skin heals and remodels. How much time yours needs is one of the things the consultation is for, so it is in your calendar before the appointment is.

Is IPL suitable for every skin tone? +

No. IPL is not appropriate for every skin type or pigmentation concern, which is the first thing the consultation establishes and the reason it happens before anything is booked. Where IPL is not the right answer, the conversation moves to what is.

How many IPL sessions are usually recommended? +

A series of treatments may be recommended for optimal improvement, and the number is set at the consultation rather than sold as a package in advance. Temporary redness or mild swelling may occur after a session, and treated brown spots may initially darken before gradually fading or flaking.

What should I do before the consultation? +

Come off a stretch without sun if you can, bring photographs of every product label and prescription you use on your face, and know the dates of anything you have had done elsewhere. The more exact those three answers are, the more a single consultation can settle.

Do you serve Blaine, Andover, Anoka and Fridley? +

Yes. The studio is at 3183 Northdale Blvd NW Suite B, Coon Rapids, MN 55433, on Northdale Boulevard NW just off Highway 10, and guests come in from Blaine, Andover, Anoka, Ramsey, Fridley and Champlin. The suite number is painted on the door as 3183B and parking is free directly in front.

— Research & references

Skin treatments are worth reading about before you book one. The American Academy of Dermatology and the FDA publish plain-language guidance on every one we offer: AAD — chemical peels, microneedling, what lasers and light devices treat, FDA — microneedling devices, medical lasers. General references from dermatology and regulatory bodies, not claims about an individual result. Treatments at Fiona's Day Spa are wellness and beauty services. They are not medical care and they do not diagnose, treat or cure any condition. If you have a scalp, skin or health concern, see a physician or a dermatologist.

Both of these start with a conversation about your skin.

Call to arrange the consultation. It is the appointment where the plan, the timing and the cost are settled together — and where you find out whether CO₂ or IPL is the right answer for what you want to change.
