What is a Korean head spa?
A treatment for the scalp rather than for the hair growing out of it. Over an hour the scalp is read, cleansed in more than one pass, exfoliated around the follicles, massaged for a long stretch, then treated and rinsed. Hair comes out softer and shinier as a consequence of the scalp underneath being properly clean, which is a different route to the same result than any conditioner takes.
You lie back on a reclining table with your head supported over a basin and the lights down. Nothing is upright, nothing is in front of a mirror, and the therapist works above you for the whole sixty minutes.
February is when the phone rings for this. Indoor heat runs in Minnesota from October through April and it pulls moisture out of a scalp the same way it does the backs of your hands — flaking along the part line, a tight feeling by the end of the day, and static that was not there in September.
Where the treatment comes from
Japan first, then Korea. Japanese salons built the original ritual around a long scalp wash and massage, and Korean studios refined it into the staged version most people picture now — scalp read first, products chosen from what the therapist finds. The hour here is inspired by Korean and Japanese scalp-care traditions, which is why the row on the booking system carries both names.
How it differs from a salon shampoo
A shampoo bowl gets your scalp about two minutes of contact before the conditioner goes on, where a head spa gives it the whole hour. The cleanse runs in stages instead of one pass, the exfoliation step has no equivalent at a wash basin at all, and the massage runs long enough to fall asleep in.

What happens during the appointment?
It opens with a scalp analysis and closes with a blow-dry, and the stages in between run in the same order every time, with the products changing according to what the first stage turned up.
- 01
Scalp analysis
Your scalp is looked at before anything is chosen — how oily or dry it is that day, where buildup has collected, whether anywhere is tender or irritated. The products for the rest of the hour get picked from what shows up here.
- 02
The staged cleanse
Cleansing runs in more than one pass. The first lifts styling product and surface oil; the ones after it work section by section into what is sitting around the follicles, which is the part a single wash never reaches.
- 03
Exfoliation
Dead skin around the follicles is cleared away with a scrub or an enzyme. No step in a normal shower routine replaces this one, which is part of why a scalp can feel coated even when the hair was washed that morning.
- 04
The scalp massage
The longest stage of the hour. It moves across the scalp, along the hairline, behind the ears, then down into the neck and shoulders, at a pressure firm enough to feel like a massage and never sharp — say so if a spot is tender and the therapist works around it.
- 05
Treatment
A serum, mask or oil — whichever your scalp was reading for at the start — is worked in and left to sit while the massage carries on through the neck and shoulders.
- 06
The warm-water rinse
Everything is rinsed out slowly under warm running water, with your head supported the whole time. The rinse is the reason the room is built around a reclining table with a basin.
- 07
Blow-dry
Your hair is dried before you leave, so you go straight on to whatever is next.
Come with your hair the way it normally is
Do not wash it first. The scalp is assessed as it usually sits, and arriving freshly washed hides the exact thing the therapist is trying to see; your hair is washed several times during the treatment anyway. Arrive five minutes early, say if you have coloured your hair recently so the cleanse can be adjusted, and mention anywhere on the scalp that is sore before the massage starts.

Can two people book together?
Yes — both head spa tables sit in one room, and that room was set up for two guests at the same hour. A head spa room is normally built for one person, so booking for two turns into two appointments an hour apart with somebody sitting in a waiting area for the first of them. A scalp room with two tables in it is the rare thing across Anoka County, and it is why couples drive in from Blaine, Andover and Anoka instead of booking closer to home.
Couples book it, friends book it, mothers and daughters book it, and it makes a gift card you can hand over with your own name already on the second table. Call (763) 317-6018 to book both at once, so the two appointments are placed side by side instead of landing an hour apart.
What the curtain is for
A full-height privacy curtain runs between the two tables and closes on request. Two guests who arrive together do not always want the hour to run the same way — one may want to talk through it while the other would rather the room stayed quiet — and drawing the curtain turns each side into its own room without either of them having to negotiate it. Ask at the desk, or say so when you book.

How much does a Korean head spa cost?
$130 for 60 min, and $152 if your hair is longer or thicker. Combinations that add a facial or a massage start at $185. Every figure below comes straight out of the booking system, so the price here is the price you are charged.
The whole menu →| Treatment | Duration | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Korean–Japanese Head Spa Longer and/or thicker hair · $152 $30 deposit at booking, applied to the total | 60 min | $130 |
| Head Spa & Facial Combination Longer and/or thicker hair · $205 $50 deposit at booking, applied to the total | 90 min | $185 |
| Korean Head Spa & Body Massage Longer or thicker hair · $205 $35 deposit at booking, applied to the total | 85 min | $185 |
| Head Spa, Facial & Massage Longer and/or thicker hair · $272 $50 deposit at booking, applied to the total | 120 min | $250 |
One more combination sits on the menu without any scalp work in it — Facial & Massage Combo (90 min, $165), which is on the skin care page. Gratuity is not included in any of these.
Why longer hair is a different price
Longer or thicker hair requires additional treatment and styling time. That is why it is booked as the longer appointment at $152 — more product and more minutes, from the cleanse down to the blow-dry. Please select the appropriate option when booking; our team can assist if you are unsure.
About the deposit
A $30 card deposit holds the head spa booking, and the longer combinations take between $30 and $60, because each of them holds a therapist and the room for an hour or more. The deposit comes off what you pay on the day rather than sitting on top of it. Cancellations with 24 hours' notice are not charged; inside that window the fee is 50% of the service cost.

Why book your head spa here?
The owner spent about thirteen years in South Korea and still flies back every year to train. Fiona was born in China, moved to Korea at twenty, and told VoyageMinnesota that she arrived in Minnesota in 2016 speaking no English and picked massage therapy because it was work she could do with people without needing words for it.
She holds a degree in massage therapy from Northwestern Health Sciences University and advanced esthetics training from Saint Paul College, and she is a registered nurse as well as a licensed massage therapist and advanced practice esthetician — which is why the same studio can run a head spa, a facial and a massage back to back in one appointment. The continuing education trips to Korea are also the reason the menu keeps growing toward advanced skin care. There is more of that on the about page.
Guests drive in from across the north metro. If you are coming down Highway 10, up Round Lake Boulevard or across from Blaine and Andover, the areas we serve page has the route from each town, and directions and the map are on the contact page. The studio also does massage and facials and skin care, and the guides walk through what happens in an appointment if you would rather read first.
Who you will see
Five therapists perform the head spa, and the booking system shows you which of them is free before you pick a time.

5/5 Experience! First ever full self-care regime with professional facial and massage. Definitely coming back again! Fiona will take care of you on your wants and needs. Even if you're not confident in what you seek, she will provide her professional thoughts and ideas. Provides reassurance during the session on comfort, which as first time experience relaxed me even more. Loved the conversations! The only sad part was that it ended, but that is a more reasoning to come back. Thank you, Fiona!
How much does a head spa cost in Coon Rapids? +
$130 for the 60 min Korean–Japanese Head Spa, and $152 if your hair is longer or thicker — that second price is not a surcharge for being difficult, it is a longer appointment. Combinations start at $185. A $30 deposit holds the booking and comes off the final bill.
How long does a head spa take? +
60 min. Combinations run longer — 90 min when a facial is added, 120 min for head spa, facial and massage together.
Should I wash my hair before I come? +
No. The scalp is assessed as it normally is, and your hair is washed during the treatment. Arriving freshly washed hides the thing the therapist is trying to see.
Does a head spa hurt? +
No. The pressure is firm enough to feel like a massage and never sharp. Say so if a spot is tender — sensitivity around the hairline and behind the ears is common and easy to work around.
Which hair types is a head spa suitable for? +
Head spa treatments can be customized for many hair and scalp types, including straight, wavy, curly, fine, thick and color-treated hair. Please let us know about recent chemical or color services when booking.
Will a head spa strip my hair colour? +
A standard head spa should not noticeably affect professionally applied colour, though deep-cleansing treatments can contribute to fading over time. Tell your therapist if you have coloured your hair recently and the cleanse is adjusted.
How often should you get a head spa? +
Frequency depends on your scalp, hair, product use and goals. Your provider can recommend a schedule after seeing your scalp.
What does a head spa actually do? +
It gives you a properly clean scalp and an hour of genuine quiet. Buildup that shampoo leaves behind is lifted, the scalp is hydrated, and the massage relieves the tightness that collects across the scalp, neck and shoulders. Hair usually feels softer and looks shinier afterwards because the scalp it grows from is clean.
Can a head spa help with hair loss? +
A head spa is not a medical treatment for hair loss and is not offered as one. Keeping the scalp clean and comfortable supports the environment hair grows in, which is a reasonable thing to want. If you are losing hair noticeably, see a dermatologist first — the two are not in competition, and knowing the cause makes everything else more useful.
Is there any reason to reschedule? +
Yes, four: open cuts or wounds on the scalp, a contagious scalp infection, a bad scalp sunburn, and recent scalp surgery or a medical procedure unless your doctor has cleared it. Call and move the appointment — there is no charge for rescheduling with notice.
— Research & references
A head spa is a wellness treatment, and the parts of it with published background are the massage and the scalp itself. Worth reading in their own words: the NCCIH on massage therapy , the AAD on seborrheic dermatitis — the medical name for scalp dandruff , healthy hair and scalp care and when shedding is worth a dermatologist's opinion . These are general references on the subject, not statements about what our treatments do. Treatments at Fiona's Day Spa are wellness and beauty services. They are not medical care and they do not diagnose, treat or cure any condition. If you have a scalp, skin or health concern, see a physician or a dermatologist.
