What is CO2 fractional laser resurfacing?
A CO₂ laser resurfaces skin, and “fractional” describes how it is delivered: the beam is split into a grid of microscopic columns, so treated and untreated skin sit side by side across the area instead of the whole surface being taken down in one pass.
The studio sets out what it is for in a single sentence: “Renew and resurface your skin with advanced CO₂ fractional laser treatment. Designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores, sun damage, and skin firmness by stimulating the skin's natural renewal and collagen response.”
Resurfacing sits on the AAD's list of what lasers and light devices are used to treat, alongside the light-based treatments. The shorter, colour-focused option on the same consultation list is IPL skin rejuvenation, which is aimed at pigment and redness.
What it is aimed at, in the studio's own order
Six things: fine lines, acne scars, uneven texture, enlarged-looking pores, sun damage and skin firmness. Every one of them describes an appearance, not a cure — and that is the wording any studio should be held to.
How it differs from a peel or a dermaplane
A Chemical Peel at $70+ for 25 min and a Dermaplane at $70 are exfoliation appointments — surface work, bookable online, finished inside half an hour. CO₂ resurfacing sits at the far end of the same idea: consultation first, downtime attached, and no online booking at any price. What are the risks of CO2 laser resurfacing?
The FDA lists six: incomplete treatment, pain, infection, bleeding, scarring and changes in skin colour. That list comes from the regulator that clears the devices, and it is the reason this page ends in a phone number rather than a booking button.
Why the consultation is not optional
The AAD says four things about laser treatment for scars, and each one changes how an appointment should be planned: a consultation comes first, more than one session is usual, results take months to appear, and sun exposure afterwards can make scarring worse.
Ask what device is being used
Resurfacing lasers are not interchangeable, and the settings chosen matter more than the name on the machine. Ask what is being used on your skin, and ask what happens if your skin responds differently from the plan. Any studio worth booking will answer both.

How do you plan CO2 resurfacing around work?
Count backwards from the first date you need to look entirely ordinary, and leave weeks of margin. Redness is the last part of the recovery to go, and the AAD's note that results take months describes the improvement rather than the healing.
If there is a date on the calendar
A wedding, a graduation, family photographs or a flight somewhere sunny are all reasons to move the treatment date. Bring the date to the consultation and the plan is built around it instead of colliding with it.
If a second session is recommended
More than one session is usual for scar work — the AAD states that outright. The spacing is set at the consultation, and the whole course is the thing to plan around.

CO2 laser recovery, stage by stage
Redness, swelling, sensitivity, peeling or crusting may occur during healing, and results develop over the weeks and months that follow — the studio's own note, mapped onto the windows people ask about. Consultation required. Individual results and downtime vary. The version that applies to your skin comes out of the consultation.
- 1 Day 0 — the appointment The treatment happens in one visit. Redness and swelling are the first things to appear and the skin is sensitive from the moment the session ends, so nothing else belongs on that day's calendar.
- 2 Days 1 to 3 — swelling and redness This is the window in which swelling and redness are most noticeable and sensitivity is highest. The aftercare instructions you were given at the consultation matter more here than any routine you already have; follow those.
- 3 Days 3 to 7 — peeling and crusting Peeling or crusting may appear as the treated surface sheds. Leave it to come away on its own, and keep the skin out of the sun entirely while it does.
- 4 Weeks 2 to 4 — the skin settles Redness is usually the last of it to fade. Sun protection stays non-negotiable through this window: the AAD warns that sun exposure after laser treatment can make scarring worse, and its instruction is to cover all exposed skin and reapply at least every two hours.
- 5 Months 2 to 6 — remodelling Results develop gradually over the following weeks and months as the skin heals and remodels. This is also the window in which a second session, if one was recommended, is normally scheduled.
